Black Magic Notes

Prep

Wash mini to remove mold release

  • soap and water, brush with tooth brush, dip in clean water

Sand/scrape off mold lines

Optionally: Pin using pin vice / hand drill

Optionally: Fill cracks

  • using putty. Roll into thin strip, press into crack. Maybe work in with water.
  • baking soda + superglue. Either glue first then spring soda OR soda in crack drip in glue

Primer:

Reaper Bones - Dont use rattle can. Prime with acrylic craft paint (do not dilute water!)

Colors

Gray- light gray. Great default
Black- makes gaps look like shadows, but light colors require many layers
White- Good for light colors. Dark colors have a hard time covering
Pink/tan- good for minis with lots of flesh
Green/*- Trolls, ooze, etc.

Highlight layer

After priming, spray white from top/angle. This allows the the highlights to show through and create a light source effect

Re-base mini

When gluing mini to plastic base. Make sure to hide sculpted base
1: glue down sand. Use Fine grain.
Don't use PVA, it will peel off
spread out superglue, dip in sand
2: sculp greenstuff/miliput around the base

Can also remove mini from base

  • good idea to pin the feat to the base with paper clip / hand drill

Can glut to clear acrylic base (dm scotty)

Paint

Start with big sections, bright colors (since wash tones them down)
2-3 coats of every color
Wash
Then use base color to highlight !!!!!!

Washes

Nuln Oil, fleshshade

Finish

Minwax Polyurethane for terrain, but can yellow over time
testors dullcote - standard for minis

  • 1 drop grass green
  • spot of black

finish with dusting of grass green

Craft paint in airbrush

Flow Improver - stays wet longer
Thinner - Dries faster
Distilled water - neutral - too much breaks down paint

50/50 water + thinner works

Cheapest $0.50 bottles might not work with water

Steps:

  1. add water enough to cover top. Put drop on side cup, if it sticks, it's too thin. Add some drops until it flows
